Fraunhofer-Institut für Photonische Mikrosysteme IPMS

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

Working student: Circuit and layout design for ferroelectric non-volatile memories

Developing innovative technology solutions and bringing them to application - that is our goal at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS. With our expertise in the development of photonic microsystems, related technologies including nanoelectronics and wireless communication solutions, we create - in flexible and interdisciplinary teams - technologies for innovative products in a wide range of markets such as automotive, industrial and aerospace.

The development of new components and integration concepts for semiconductor devices with a wide range of applications is an important field of research at the Center for Nanoelectronic Technologies (CNT) of the Fraunhofer IPMS. One research focus is on the development of non-volatile memory technologies based on ferroelectric hafnium oxide. These are used beyond traditional storage applications, including AI applications. To design a full memory array and use it for AI applications, high-performance peripheral circuits are needed. As a working student, you will collaborate with our teams to design a new sense amplifier topology and test structures for memory bit-cells. You will work on both circuit and layout design, with layout as your primary task. Finally, you will contribute to non-volatile memory (NVM) design through collaborative design and layout with the team.

Aufgabenbeschreibung:

  • Tapout layout modification: Modify the existing test structure layouts for the tapout, ensuring they meet design specifications and project requirements.
  • Design for Manufacturability layout preparation: Create and optimize the layout for Design for Manufacturability (DFM), focusing on reducing potential fabrication challenges and ensuring compliance with manufacturing standards.
  • Layout automation adoption: Implement and adopt layout automation techniques to streamline the design process, reduce manual effort, and ensure consistency across layouts.
  • Sense amplifier topology review: Conduct a detailed review of different sense amplifier topologies, evaluating their performance, trade-offs, and suitability for specific applications.
  • Sense amplifier and bit cell test structure design: Design sense amplifier circuits and various bit cell test structures, ensuring compatibility with the broader system architecture and performance goals.
  • Electrical verification layout documentation: Document the layouts comprehensively for electrical verification, detailing methodologies, results, and any considerations for future improvements.

Erwartete Qualifikationen:

  • Academic Background: You have completed a Bachelor's degree and are pursuing a Master's or Diploma degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field and you have a solid understanding of semiconductor device physics and integrated circuit design.
  • Technical Skills: You possess knowledge of EDA tools such as Cadence Virtuoso, Tanner EDA, or similar and basic familiarity with scripting languages like TCL, SKILL, Python, or MATLAB.
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: You have strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a structured and detail-oriented approach to work.
  • Adaptability: You are quick to familiarize yourself with new technical and scientific contexts and demonstrate a proactive learning attitude.
  • Language Skills: You have excellent written and spoken English skills, enabling effective communication in an international research environment.
