Working student: Design of RF/mmWave integrated circuits with ferroelectric thin-film varactors

Developing innovative technology solutions and bringing them to application - that is our goal at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS. With our expertise in the development of photonic microsystems, related technologies including nanoelectronics and wireless communication solutions, we create - in flexible and interdisciplinary teams - technologies for innovative products in a wide range of markets such as automotive, industrial and aerospace.

The development of new components and integration concepts for semiconductor devices with a wide range of applications is an important field of research at the Center Nanoelectronic Technologies (CNT) of the Fraunhofer IPMS. One research focus is on the design and integration of active and passive RF/mmWave elements into the BEoL technology. The key milestone is building a demonstrator based on ferroelectric Hafnium oxide varactors for tuning the oscillation frequency of those elements. The selected candidate will support our design team at the design level.

Aufgabenbeschreibung:

  • Voltage-controlled oscillator and phase shifter design: You design and optimize a voltage-controlled oscillator and phase shifter leveraging BEoL-integrated ferroelectric hafnium oxide, focusing on achieving high performance and integration efficiency.
  • RF/mmWave network simulation: You simulate RF/mmWave networks operating within the 10 GHz - 110 GHz frequency range, incorporating ferroelectric varactors using tools like Cadence Virtuoso, Ansys HFSS, and Keysight ADS to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Layout preparation for fabrication: You develop a detailed layout for the circuit fabrication process, ensuring compliance with manufacturing constraints and design specifications.
  • Design-rule checking (DRC) and LVS checking: You perform final design-rule checking (DRC) and layout vs. schematic (LVS) validation to ensure the layout adheres to foundry rules and matches the schematic design.
  • Documentation: You create comprehensive documentation detailing the design, simulation, and validation workflows, including methodologies, results, and tool-specific configurations.

Erwartete Qualifikationen:

  • Academic Background: You have an academic foundation in Electrical Engineering with a focus on RF/mmWave engineering. Knowledge of CMOS integration flow, materials physics, and solid-state physics is a plus.
  • Technical Skills: You have experience with ANSYS HFSS or Keysight ADS and familiarity with RF design, synthesis, FEM, and MoM simulations. Quick learning skills with the ability to grasp new concepts from literature are highly appreciated.
  • Problem-Solving: You demonstrate a structured, resilient approach, and are capable of debugging and iterating designs for novel devices. Patience and perseverance are essential.
  • Creativity and Flexibility: You have the ability to generate original ideas while adapting to conventional approaches when required.
  • Communication: You possess strong responsiveness, collaboration, and constructive feedback skills.
  • Language Skills: You are proficient in written and spoken English for effective international collaboration.
