“Model exper­i­ments for crys­tal growth”

Work­ing field:

Within the frame­work of a highly regarded Start­ing Grant from the European Research Coun­cil (ERC) we are set­ting up a group "Model exper­i­ments" at the IKZ to work on a new gen­er­a­tion of mul-tiphys­ical mod­els for crys­tal growth pro­cesses (see News on our webpage). The pro­ject team will develop a ded­ic­ated exper­i­mental plat­form for the ana­lysis of heat trans­fer, elec­tro­mag­net­ism, melt and gas flows as well as crys­tal stresses in order to build and val­id­ate coupled numer­ical mod­els. Here you will have the oppor­tun­ity to work in high-impact research for future tech­no­lo­gies.
Your respons­ib­il­it­ies:
  • Ana­lyze selec­ted crys­tal growth pro­cesses at IKZ (e.g., Czo­chral­ski growth of oxides above 1500 °C) with respect to mac­ro­scopic phys­ical phe­nom­ena
  • Design phys­ic­ally sim­ilar crys­tal growth sys­tems work­ing at lower tem­per­at­ures
  • Develop and build an exper­i­mental plat­form with extens­ive cap­ab­il­it­ies for in-situ obser­va­tion
  • Select and integ­rate state-of-the-art meas­ur­ing equip­ment for vari­ous fields (e.g., thermal ima­ging, laser dis­tance sensors, ultra­sonic veloci­metry)
  • Guide PhD stu­dents in exper­i­mental stud­ies and val­id­a­tion of the­or­et­ical mod­els


  • PhD in phys­ical or mater­ial sci­ences, engin­eer­ing or related dis­cip­line with an excel­lent score
  • Solid know­ledge in the­ory and prac­tice of thermal engin­eer­ing and mater­i­als pro­cessing
  • Prac­tical exper­i­ence in the design and devel­op­ment of sci­entific equip­ment
  • Good under­stand­ing of com­plex meas­ure­ment and sensor sys­tems
  • Out­stand­ing cap­ab­il­ity of sci­entific work with a good pub­lic­a­tion record

What we of­fer:

The pos­i­tion is ini­tially lim­ited to 2 years. Pay­ment is accord­ing to TVöD (Treaty for Ger­man pub­lic ser­vice). IKZ is an equal oppor­tun­ity employer.
