Work­ing field:

As part of a European joint pro­ject within the Era­CoBi­otech frame­work pro­gram, multi-pos­i­tion sensors are to be used to meas­ure gradi­ents in indus­trial scale biore­act­ors and mimik these gradi­ents in labor­at­ory scale. In par­tic­u­lar, the influ­ence of com­plex media com­pon­ents, espe­cially amino acids, in inter­ac­tion with gradi­ents on bac­terial and yeast cell physiology and mor­pho­logy as a stress response will be invest­ig­ated. In addi­tion to invest­ig­a­tions at the meta­bolome and pro­teome level, single cell-based optical meth­ods are also used to eval­u­ate vital­ity and viab­il­ity. The res­ults obtained will be dis­cussed with part­ners from the fields of micro­bi­o­logy, biopro­cess engin­eer­ing and fluid mech­an­ics. In addi­tion to the exper­i­mental work, sup­port shall be provided in con­duct­ing work­shops, pub­lish­ing res­ults in sci­entific journ­als and present­ing the pro­ject res­ults at sci­entific con­fer­ences. In addi­tion to work, there is the pos­sib­il­ity of obtain­ing a PhD.
  • Test and applic­a­tion of mobile mul­ti­para­meter probes at dif­fer­ent react­ors at indus­trial part­ners in Ger­many and Europe.
  • Rep­lic­a­tion of gradi­ents in labor­at­ory biore­actor cul­tiv­a­tions and invest­ig­a­tion of the stress response of cells at dif­fer­ent levels tak­ing into account the syn­thesis per­form­ance (bio­mass, pro­teins, sec­ond­ary meta­bol­ites) using enzymatic and chro­ma­to­graphic detec­tion meth­ods, micro­scopic and flow cyto­met­ric invest­ig­a­tions, partly on a single-cell level.
  • Eval­u­ation of dif­fer­ent scale-down react­ors and the influ­ence of gradi­ents and media com­pos­i­tion on pro­cess per­form­ance, based on this media / pro­cess and strain optim­iz­a­tion in cooper­a­tion with the part­ners.


  • Suc­cess­fully com­pleted uni­versity degree (Mas­ter, Dip­lom or equi­val­ent) in the field of bio­tech­no­logy with a focus on bioen­gin­eer­ing, the fol­low­ing know­ledge/skills are desir­able: - micro­bial cul­tiv­a­tion in labor­at­ory biore­act­ors, - meta­bolic path­ways, - basic ana­lyt­ical meth­ods for the determ­in­a­tion of primary and sec­ond­ary meta­bol­ites, - stand­ard pro­ced­ures in bio­tech­no­lo­gical labor­at­or­ies, - present­a­tion of sci­entific res­ults.
  • Ideally, the can­did­ate has exper­i­ence in strain main­ten­ance, media selec­tion, flow cyto­metry and know­ledge of reg­u­lat­ory and mor­pho­lo­gical rela­tion­ships, exper­i­ence in the cul­tiv­a­tion of yeast and/or Bacil­lus is desir­able.
  • The will­ing­ness to act­ively par­ti­cip­ate in pro­fes­sional events is a pre­requis­ite. The can­did­ate should be char­ac­ter­ized by open com­mu­nic­a­tion and a good com­mand of Eng­lish (col­lo­quial and tech­nical lan­guage). Know­ledge of Ger­man is advant­age­ous.
