Technische Universität Berlin - Faculty V - Mechanical Engineering and Transport Systems, Institute of Fluid Dynamics and Transport Systems

W3-Professorship for the Chair of Fluid System Dynamics

About us:

Technische Universität Berlin has approximately 35,000 students, 350 professors, and 7,000 staff, and is a University of Excellence within the Berlin University Alliance. We very much value the diversity of our members and are committed to equal opportunities. We are a certified family-friendly university.

Your responsibilities:

Teaching of the basic principles, methods, and applications of fluid system dynamics. Undertaking teaching tasks relating to the subjects of fluid system dynamics, fluid dynamics, and fluid machinery in the faculty's bachelor's and master's degree programs, in particular in the degree programs in Engineering Science and Mechanical Engineering. Applicants must be able to teach courses in German and English.

In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to conduct research in the field of fluid system dynamics with at least two of the following areas of specialization:

  • Characterization, design, and optimization of hydraulic turbomachinery and fluid systems of different scales (including the necessary experimental methods and simulation procedures); application both as a prerequisite for an integrated, precisely fitting design of fluid systems and for operational monitoring with regard to function and wear (for example for water and wastewater systems, but also in machines and devices)
  • Control and operational optimization of fluid systems with the aim of increasing performance, efficiency, and availability (including the necessary sensors, actuators, and data processing) as a contribution to sustainable operation
  • Fluid systems in the context of the energy transition (e.g. pumps for pumping hydrogen and energy carriers based on this, for redox flow batteries, or hydraulic power machines for renewable energies); dealing with issues related to new technologies for energy conversion and storage

The successful candidate will be expected to offer and supervise research activities for final theses and doctoral theses. The professorship also entails the acquisition and management of third-party funded projects and close cooperation with the existing academic chairs/research groups in the fields of fluid mechanics, mechanics, and transportation, among others.

Further responsibilities include leading and managing the chair and its staff; supporting the advancement of junior scholars, women, and diversity; knowledge and technology transfer; initiatives to promote internationalization; gender and diversity competence, and sustainability-oriented action; as well as committee work.

Your profile:

The candidate must fulfill the hiring requirements pursuant to Section 100 of the Berlin State Higher Education Act (BerlHG). These include a university degree; a pronounced aptitude for academic work, generally demonstrated by the quality of the candidate's doctorate; additional academic achievements, generally demonstrated by a positively evaluated junior professorship, Habilitation, or equivalent achievement; and an aptitude for teaching documented by a teaching portfolio (for further information regarding teaching portfolios, please refer to the website of Technische Universität Berlin: https://www.tu.berlin/en/go209650/).

Further requirements are several years of subject-specific teaching experience and a demonstrable and internationally outstanding research profile in at least one of the above-mentioned research areas, supported by relevant publications and patents, for example. In addition, experience of experimental investigations on fluid systems is expected. Proven interdisciplinary cooperation and experience in knowledge and/or technology transfer are also required.

Desirable competences:

Technische Universität Berlin expects its professors to possess the ability to head their academic chair/research group, manage its staff, and assume responsibility for its strategic development. For us, this includes commitment to the advancement of junior scholars and women, the gender and diversity competence required to create diversity-sensitive working and study conditions, providing fresh impetus in research and teaching, and participating in academic self-administration. Experience in science communication is desirable.

As a university with an international profile, we require our professors to teach in German and English, or be willing to acquire the language skills they lack within a reasonable period of time.

How to apply:

Our Dual Career Service can assist you and your family with your move to Berlin.

Technische Universität Berlin is seeking to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and actively encourages applications from suitably qualified female candidates. Preference will be given to applicants with severe disabilities who equally fulfill the requirements of the position.
