Work­ing field:

The research assist­ant will work within the inter­na­tional and inter­dis­cip­lin­ary pro­ject ide3a and in a team of five peer research assist­ants called “ide3a ambas­sad­ors” on the topic of “Crit­ical Infra­struc­ture & Digit­al­iz­a­tion”. ide3a aims to imple­ment this inter­dis­cip­lin­ary topic in tra­di­tional research-based study pro­grams, com­bined with gami­fic­a­tion mech­an­isms and short courses, access­ible at the ide3a part­ner uni­versit­ies and sup­por­ted by digital edu­ca­tion plat­forms and open know­ledge tools.
The research assist­ant will be loc­ated in the Com­plex and Dis­trib­uted Sys­tems group of Prof. Dr. Odej Kao ( at TU Ber­lin and will also have access to the inter­dis­cip­lin­ary work­ing envir­on­ment of the Ein­stein Cen­ter Digital Future. Moreover, the research activ­it­ies will be developed col­lab­or­at­ively with the research groups at the ide3a part­ner uni­versit­ies in Europe (Nor­we­gian Uni­versity of Sci­ence and Tech­no­logy, Dub­lin City Uni­versity, Cra­cow Uni­versity of Tech­no­logy, Politec­nico di Mil­ano). Short research stays at these uni­versit­ies are highly encour­aged and will be sup­por­ted fin­an­cially by ide3a.
The can­did­ate will research new mod­els and tools to co-sim­u­late dis­trib­uted com­put­ing infra­struc­tures with other crit­ical infra­struc­tures (e.g. water net­works, traffic and trans­port­a­tion sys­tems, elec­tric grids) and, thereby, con­trib­ute to the devel­op­ment of a multi-layered, open source ser­i­ous game that allows scen­ario ana­lysis and optim­iz­a­tion of crit­ical urban infra­struc­ture sys­tems under het­ero­gen­eous social, tech­nical, and cli­mate scen­arios. A pro­fes­sional game developer and stu­dent work­ers will sup­port these activ­it­ies.
The tasks for this pos­i­tion include
(i) the pub­lic­a­tion of research out­comes in sci­entific papers and present­a­tions at inter­na­tional con­fer­ences,
(ii) con­tri­bu­tions to the teach­ing activ­it­ies and hack­a­thons of the ide3a pro­ject, and
(iii) sup­port of BSc/MSc stu­dents in their thesis pre­par­a­tion.
The pos­i­tion includes the option to pre­pare a PhD thesis.


  • Suc­cess­fully com­pleted uni­versity degree (Mas­ter, Dip­lom or equi­val­ent) in com­puter sci­ence or a related field
  • Good know­ledge of dis­trib­uted sys­tems, cloud com­put­ing / vir­tu­al­iz­a­tion, soft­ware engin­eer­ing/test­ing, and sim­u­la­tion
  • Solid pro­gram­ming skills in Python
  • Exper­i­ences with cluster resource man­age­ment with con­tain­ers/Docker
  • Good know­ledge of machine learn­ing and optim­iz­a­tion
  • Very good com­mand of Ger­man and Eng­lish
  • Excel­lent com­mu­nic­a­tion skills, team­work skills, pro­act­ive beha­vior, and com­mit­ment
  • Prefer­able: Exper­i­ence in teach­ing and research; agile pro­ject man­age­ment and iter­at­ive soft­ware devel­op­ment meth­od­o­lo­gies; cluster Admin­is­tra­tion.
