Work­ing field:

The assign­ments com­prise the work on a research pro­ject fun­ded by the Ger­man Fed­eral Min­istry for Eco­nomic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). This pro­ject is col­lab­or­a­tion with external part­ners, in the frame of which the par­ti­cip­at­ing TU chairs are cooper­at­ing closely. Research top­ics are sev­eral muffler con­cepts of the future for air­craft engines and other areas of applic­a­tion. Based on ini­tial invest­ig­a­tions, where a proof of concept was achieved, the basis for the mod­el­ing and tar­geted design of the damper con­cepts shall be developed fur­ther.

The tasks at the Chair of Tur­boma­chinery- and Ther­moacous­tics include the devel­op­ment of an acous­tic model of a Helm­holtz res­on­ator with a flex­ible wall and its veri­fic­a­tion based on exper­i­mental data. Fur­ther work shall extend the model descrip­tion to Helm­holtz res­on­ator arrays con­tain­ing flex­ible wall ele­ments, and involve exper­i­mental invest­ig­a­tions for its veri­fic­a­tion. Fur­ther­more, non­lin­ear­it­ies as well as the influ­ence of the flow and of external vibra­tions on the damp­ing per­form­ance are to be invest­ig­ated.

The tasks at the Chair of Engin­eer­ing Acous­tics include the exper­i­mental char­ac­ter­isa­tion and the work on acous­tic mater­ial mod­els as well as the imple­ment­a­tion of ana­lyt­ical mod­els for plate absorbers in Python and the par­ti­cip­a­tion in exper­i­mental val­id­a­tion. In addi­tion, acous­tic FEM mod­els will be imple­men­ted and the res­ults of ana­lyt­ical and numer­ical cal­cu­la­tions will be ana­lyzed.
Finally, the ana­lyt­ical and numer­ical mod­els are to be applied for the design of lab samples of silen­cers.

Require­ments:

  • can­did­ates must have com­pleted a uni­versity degree (Dip­lom, Mas­ter or equi­val­ent) in an engin­eer­ing or phys­ics sub­ject
  • very good know­ledge of engin­eer­ing acous­tics with spe­cial focus on flow acous­tics and acous­tic damp­ing is
  • very good know­ledge and skills in the field of acous­tic meas­ure­ment sys­tems and sig­nal pro­cessing
  • fun­da­mental know­ledge in numer­ical sim­u­la­tion meth­ods
  • skills in Python, MAT­LAB or another pro­gram­ming lan­guage
  • will­ing­ness to par­ti­cip­ate and act­ively sup­port a research team
  • very good Ger­man skills as well as good Eng­lish skills (orally and in writ­ing)
Desired:
  • exper­i­ence with FEM-Soft­ware
  • know­ledge of the­ory or applic­a­tion of mufflers
  • good know­ledge on tur­boma­chinery and air­craft engines
