TIB, being part of the Leib­niz Research Asso­ci­ation, is with around 550 employ­ees one of the largest tech­nical inform­a­tion centres in Ger­many, hav­ing three main func­tions:
1. Act­ing in the capa­city of the Leib­niz Inform­a­tion Centre for Sci­ence and Tech­no­logy, our for­ward-look­ing ser­vices secure the infra­struc­tural require­ments for provid­ing research­ers in sci­ence and industry with high-qual­ity inform­a­tion and lit­er­at­ure.
2. Car­ry­ing out cut­ting edge research to fur­ther expand TIB’s role as a Ger­man inform­a­tion centre for the digit­isa­tion of sci­ence and tech­no­logy.
3. Offer lib­rary ser­vices for the Leib­niz Uni­versity Han­nover.

Research Asso­ci­ate / PhD Can­did­ate in Research Data Man­age­ment (m/f/d)

to work in the Leib­niz Joint Lab Data Sci­ence and Open Know­ledge of the TIB Research and Devel­op­ment depart­ment and the L3S Research Cen­ter under the super­vi­sion of Dr. Javad Cham­an­ara and Prof. Dr. Sören Auer.

The pos­i­tion is lim­ited to 3 years with envi­sioned exten­sion. The reg­u­lar weekly work­ing time is 29.85 hours (part-time, 75 %). The remu­ner­a­tion is based on pay scale group 13 TV-L.

Your tasks
The research and devel­op­ment focus of the PhD pos­i­tion is on innov­at­ive Research Data Man­age­ment and Semantic Tech­no­lo­gies. The PhD topic will be in the con­text of third-party fun­ded pro­jects in the area of research data man­age­ment and the Ger­man National Research Data Infra­struc­ture ini­ti­at­ive (NFDI). The aim is to research and develop tech­niques for rep­res­ent­ing, integ­rat­ing, man­aging semantic­ally and ana­lys­ing struc­tured, rich rep­res­ent­a­tions of research data and schol­arly con­tri­bu­tions using onto­lo­gies and know­ledge graphs. The can­did­ate has the oppor­tun­ity to choose his/her dis­ser­ta­tion scope from the vari­ety of research paths provided by the pro­jects.

Require­ments:

The can­did­ate’s com­pet­ence area should be squarely rooted in com­puter sci­ence or related fields. The can­did­ate should be able to think cre­at­ively, grasp new know­ledge quickly, be able to com­bine abstract reas­on­ing with con­crete prob­lem solv­ing and be inter­ested in mas­ter­ing com­plex chal­lenges.

  • Suc­cess­fully com­pleted uni­versity degree (Mas­ter or com­par­able) in a rel­ev­ant field like Com­puter Sci­ence, Math­em­at­ics or Inform­a­tion Sci­ence.
  • Pro­fi­ciency in spoken and writ­ten Eng­lish. Pro­fi­ciency in Ger­man is a plus.
  • Excel­lent pro­fi­ciency in mod­ern pro­gram­ming lan­guages (espe­cially Python, Java and JavaS­cript) and mod­ern soft­ware engin­eer­ing meth­od­o­lo­gies. Proven team soft­ware devel­op­ment skills.
  • Research and tech­no­logy interest in Data Man­age­ment, Know­ledge Rep­res­ent­a­tion and Reas­on­ing, Semantic Tech­no­lo­gies and Web Engin­eer­ing
  • Interest in data man­age­ment accord­ing to the FAIR prin­ciples, data integ­ra­tion, semantic integ­ra­tion and query­ing of data as well as a pas­sion for mas­ter­ing and apply­ing formal meth­ods through proven tech­no­lo­gies.

The research depart­ment at the TIB is rel­at­ively young and offers many oppor­tun­it­ies. Cur­rently, there are five research groups in the depart­ment: Data Sci­ence and Digital Lib­rar­ies, Sci­entific Data Man­age­ment, Know­ledge Infra­struc­tures, Learn­ing and Skills Ana­lyt­ics, and Visual Ana­lyt­ics. Com­mon to all research groups is the vis­ion to rethink the rep­res­ent­a­tion and pro­vi­sion of data and inform­a­tion and to organ­ize them in an Open Research Know­ledge Graph (ORKG) in the future. There is a close cooper­a­tion with the Research Cen­ter L3S of Leib­niz Uni­versity Han­nover - the L3S is one of the world's lead­ing research insti­tutes in the fields of Web & Data Sci­ence. Last but not least, we attach great import­ance to an open and cre­at­ive work­ing atmo­sphere in which it is fun to work.
