Semiconductor devices are the basis of all electronic applications: from smartphones over photovoltaics and high-speed data transfer to power electronics for electromobility. Therefore, a fundamental physical understanding of these devices on a microscopic level is desirable in order to improve currently technologies as well as to figure out the capabilities of possible future devices.
At the Chair of Electromagnetic Theory, we conduct research on physical models for semiconductor devices, we develop numerical methods for that purpose and we perform microscopic simulations of such devices on our own computer cluster.
The teaching of our institute covers the lectures about electromagnetic fields for undergraduate students and specialized courses in semiconductor device simulations for master students.

Research Assistant/Associate

Work­ing field:

  • You will work on the simu­la­tion of power semi­con­duc­tor devices, that are used for example in power swit­ches for auto­mo­tive app­li­ca­ti­ons. Espe­ci­ally the relia­bi­lity of these power MOS­FETs will be a sub­ject of your inves­ti­ga­ti­ons. During its ope­ra­tion such a device degra­des, with the con­se­quence that its life­time is limi­ted. This is not only rele­vant for the indus­trial app­li­ca­tion of these devices, but also inte­res­ting from a sci­en­ti­fic point of view, because the micro­scopic mecha­nisms of this degra­da­tion are not yet com­ple­tely unders­tood.
  • A simu­la­tion frame­work, deve­lo­ped at the insti­tute, models the so-cal­led hot-car­rier degra­da­tion of such power devices based on the micro­scopic descrip­tion of the trans­port of elec­trons and holes by the Boltz­mann-trans­port equa­tion. You will use and extend this simu­la­tion frame­work, wher­eby the impro­ve­ment of sui­ta­ble phy­si­cal models, the deve­lop­ment of sta­ble simu­la­tion algo­rithms and their highly effi­ci­ent nume­ri­cal imple­men­ta­tion for high-per­for­mance com­pu­ter clus­ters are of spe­cial inte­rest.
  • The pro­ject will be per­for­med in a close col­la­bo­ra­tion with our indus­try part­ners.
  • The usual tea­ching load for sci­en­ti­fic staff app­lies.

Require­ments:

An uni­ver­sity degree (Mas­ter or equi­va­lent) in elec­tri­cal engi­nee­ring, phy­sics or mathe­ma­tics with above average results is man­datory. Expe­ri­en­ces in elec­tro­nic devices, semi­con­duc­tor phy­sics, nume­ri­cal mathe­ma­tics and high-per­for­mance com­pu­ting are appre­cia­ted. Since you will work in an inter­na­tio­nal team, the capa­city for team work as well as good Eng­lish skills, writ­ten and spo­ken, are requi­red.

What we of­fer:

  • The posi­tion is for 3 years and is to be fil­led as soon as pos­si­ble. This is a full-time posi­tion.
  • The suc­cess­ful can­di­date has the oppor­tu­nity to pur­sue a doc­to­ral degree.
  • The salary cor­re­sponds to level EG 13 TV-L.
