RWTH Aachen - Department of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology
The chair of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology at the RWTH Aachen University, Germany primarily focuses on the multi-scale analysis of hydro-mechanical coupled problems in the fields of tunnelling, rock slope instabilities and natural hazards, nuclear waste repositories, and deep geothermal energy.
Research Assistant / Associate
The successful candidate will be involved in planning and executing complex laboratory tests and electron microscopic (BIB-SEM) analysis on clay shales to investigate their potential as host rock for the storage of high-level nuclear waste.
We welcome applicants with a University degree (Master or equivalent) in Geoscience, Engineering Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Rock Mechanics, Rock Physics or in a similar field. The offered PhD position is part of a large research program on the hydro-mechanical coupled behaviour of clay shales. The PhD position is associated with the development and execution of HM-coupled laboratory experiments on clay shales and the electron microscopic analysis of the microscale failure mechanism. The ideal candidate for this position has experience in experimental geomechanics of clay shales, with electron microscopy and digital image analysis. The candidate has technical skills required to establish and execute complex laboratory tests, prepare samples using ion beam milling, create and analyse multilayer gigapixel images, has excellent scientific (English) writing and communication skills, and works well in a team.
What we offer:
The position is initially limited to 2 years with the option of an extension to 4 years and is to be filled as soon as possible. The successful candidate will be part of a newly established, dynamic team of researchers. We expect to receive your application including a CV (including list of papers) and a 1-page cover letter. The letter should outline how the candidate's background fulfils the above requirements, and how this position relates to future career goals. This is a full-time position.
