The chair of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology at the RWTH Aachen University, Germany primarily focuses on the multi-scale analysis of hydro-mechanical coupled problems in the fields of tunnelling, rock slope instabilities and natural hazards, nuclear waste repositories, and deep geothermal energy.

Work­ing field:

The suc­cess­ful can­di­date will be invol­ved in plan­ning and exe­cu­ting com­plex labo­ra­tory tests and elec­tron micro­sco­pic (BIB-SEM) ana­ly­sis on clay shales to inves­ti­gate their poten­tial as host rock for the sto­rage of high-level nuclear waste.


We wel­come app­li­cants with a Uni­ver­sity degree (Mas­ter or equi­va­lent) in Geo­sci­ence, Engi­nee­ring Geo­logy, Geo­tech­ni­cal Engi­nee­ring, Rock Mecha­nics, Rock Phy­sics or in a simi­lar field. The offe­red PhD posi­tion is part of a large rese­arch pro­gram on the hydro-mecha­ni­cal cou­p­led beha­viour of clay shales. The PhD posi­tion is asso­cia­ted with the deve­lop­ment and exe­cu­tion of HM-cou­p­led labo­ra­tory expe­ri­ments on clay shales and the elec­tron micro­sco­pic ana­ly­sis of the micros­cale failure mecha­nism. The ideal can­di­date for this posi­tion has expe­ri­ence in expe­ri­men­tal geo­me­cha­nics of clay shales, with elec­tron micro­scopy and digi­tal image ana­ly­sis. The can­di­date has tech­ni­cal skills requi­red to esta­blish and exe­cute com­plex labo­ra­tory tests, pre­pare sam­ples using ion beam mil­ling, create and ana­lyse mul­ti­layer giga­pi­xel images, has excel­lent sci­en­ti­fic (Eng­lish) wri­ting and com­mu­ni­ca­tion skills, and works well in a team.

What we of­fer:

The posi­tion is initi­ally limi­ted to 2 years with the option of an exten­sion to 4 years and is to be fil­led as soon as pos­si­ble. The suc­cess­ful can­di­date will be part of a newly esta­blis­hed, dyna­mic team of rese­ar­chers. We expect to receive your app­li­ca­tion inclu­ding a CV (inclu­ding list of papers) and a 1-page cover let­ter. The let­ter should out­line how the can­di­date's back­ground ful­fils the above requi­re­ments, and how this posi­tion rela­tes to future career goals. This is a full-time posi­tion.

The suc­cess­ful can­di­date has the oppor­tu­nity to pur­sue a doc­to­ral degree.

The salary cor­re­sponds to level EG 13 TV-L.
