The “char­ac­ter­iz­a­tion of exo­planet atmo­spheres with optical phase curves” is an excit­ing, rap­idly-advan­cing topic in exo­planet sci­ence, and there are pos­sib­il­it­ies for the­or­et­ical (radi­at­ive trans­fer, pho­to­chem­istry, atmo­spheric retrieval) and obser­va­tional (pho­to­metry, time series ana­lysis) work, or, ideally, for com­bined the­or­et­ical-obser­va­tional pro­jects. Depend­ing on the emphasis of the pro­ject, the can­did­ate’s work will build upon numer­ical mod­els and pipelines avail­able within the team, and/or develop new tools and applic­a­tions.

Work­ing field:

The suc­cess­ful can­did­ate will work with Dr. Ant­o­nio Gar­cía Muñoz (TU Ber­lin, Ger­many; mem­ber of Prof. Dr. Heike Rauer’s Group) in close col­lab­or­a­tion with col­leagues at DLR Ber­lin-Adler­shof (Ger­many) and the Insti­tuto de Astro­física e Ciên­cias do Espaço (at the Univ. of Porto, Por­tugal). The work­ing team is cur­rently involved in the exploit­a­tion of CoRoT, Kepler and K2 data, and in the pre­par­a­tion for ESA’s CHEOPS (launch: 2018) and PLATO (launch: 2026) space mis­sions. The appoint­ment is fun­ded by the new DFG Pri­or­ity Pro­gram SPP 1992 ‘Explor­ing the Diversity of Exo­plan­ets’ (web­site: http://www-astro.physik.tu-berlin.de/exoplanet-diversity). One of the man­dates of the Pro­gram is to encour­age the inter­ac­tion and net­work­ing of par­ti­cipants with other SPP groups through work­shops and col­lab­or­a­tion stays.

Require­ments:

  • suc­cess­fully com­pleted uni­versity degree (Mas­ter, Dip­lom or equi­val­ent) in Phys­ics, Applied Math­em­at­ics, Met­eor­o­logy, or a related dis­cip­line.
  • Know­ledge of pro­gram­ming lan­guages such as For­tran or C (for a numer­ical pro­ject) and/or IDL or python (for an obser­va­tional pro­ject) is essen­tial.
  • A basic know­ledge of astro­phys­ics and atmo­spheric phys­ics is desir­able but not strictly neces­sary. There will be oppor­tun­it­ies for train­ing dur­ing the Pro­ject. Most import­antly, the can­did­ate is expec­ted to show ini­ti­at­ive to learn and acquire new skills.
  • Good ana­lyt­ical and inter-per­sonal skills.
  • Capa­city to work both inde­pend­ently and within an inter­na­tional team.
  • Good com­mand of Eng­lish.
