in Genetics and Proteome Remodeling during Development

Working field:

The Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden, Germany, is an institute of the world-renowned Max Planck Society conducting ground-breaking biomedical research at the forefront of science. Currently about 500 employees work at the institute, where half are from abroad, representing 53 nations. The institute has won several prizes for its optimal work conditions and family-friendly environment. English is the working language of the institute.
The research group of Dr. Matthias Muhar is looking for a
Technical Assistant (m/f/d)
in Genetics and Proteome Remodeling during Development

The new lab of Matthias Muhar investigates how cells reshape their proteome during differentiation. To perform their distinct functions, human cells radically remodel their protein landscape. Antibody producing cells, for example, devote their entire physiology to protein secretion, while neurons must defend their proteome against oxidative stress for a human lifetime. The lab seeks to uncover the underlying regulatory mechanisms that drive these transformations, combining high-throughput genetics, proteomics and chemical-biology approaches. Using mouse models, and stem-cell-based systems to study neuronal and other lineages, the group is building a collaborative, international, and inclusive team.

Main responsibilities

As a core member of the Muhar Lab, the successful candidate will take an active role in both experimental work and the day-to-day organization of our dynamic research environment. Responsibilities will evolve with the lab’s growth and initially include:

  • Developing and optimizing tools for mammalian genome engineering.
  • Culturing, propagating, and genetically engineering mammalian cells.
  • Establishing and maintaining reagent collections, plasmid and cell line stocks.
  • Coordinating lab organisation, including ordering, documentation, and equipment maintenance to ensure smooth operations and safety compliance.

Requirements:

Essential Qualifications

  • Research technician qualification (MTA/BTA or equivalent) or a scientific university degree in a relevant field.
  • Hands-on experience in molecular biology (plasmid cloning & PCR) and mammalian cell culture work.
  • Basic skills in data analysis and documentation.
  • Motivated to work collaboratively in an international research environment.
  • Well-organized and dependable, with a sense of ownership for laboratory processes.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.

Desirable Qualities

  • Experience in flow cytometry.
  • Experience in conducting and analysing high-throughput sequencing experiments

What we offer:

Our offer

We offer the opportunity to be part of the exciting process of establishing a new research group at a renowned institution, helping to shape its culture and set the standard for future members. You will work in an environment that values rigorous experimental practice, intellectual curiosity, and personal as well as scientific growth. In addition, you can expect:

  • Salary and social benefits according to the German public service pay scale (TVöD Bund), commensurate with qualification, experience, and responsibilities, up to pay group EG 9A.
  • Attractive pension plan via VBL (Federal and State Government Employees' Retirement Fund);
  • Discounted job ticket (VVO) and good public transport connections;
  • Support for a positive work-life balance, including proactive health programs and assistance with family/childcare matters.

The position is available as of 01.01.2026. The initial contract is for 2 years with the possibility of extension.
For enquiries regarding specifics of the position, please contact Matthias Muhar via muhar@mpi-cbg.de. For initial enquiries regarding contract or compensation, please contact Brian von Rueden, Head of Human Resources, via hr@mpi-cbg.de.
